ASSOCIATE TEXTILE CONSERVATOR

Temporary full time position
Anticipated starting date: Early January 2012
Ending date: February 2014.

The Textile Museum, in Washington DC, holds significant collections of historic, ethnographic, and archaeological textiles.

The Textile Museum is seeking a conservator for a temporary position. Tasks will be preparing textiles for exhibition and storage. The conservator will work in close collaboration with others: curatorial, registration, facilities staff, education, public relation, and development.

Responsibilities:
• Undertake examination of textiles and assess conservation requirements.
• Coordinate conservation projects relating to collections care in storage, on loan and on display.
• Take part on planning teams for exhibition and gallery development.
• Provide supervision/technical guidance for conservation interns, contractors, volunteers and staff.
• Answer public requests and participate in public programs when needed
• Take part in the development of conservation guidelines and standards for collection care and conservation workshop.

Qualifications:

• Degree from a recognized conservation training program. 5 years of experience in textile conservation in a museum setting or an acceptable equivalent in education and experience
• Knowledge of textile materials and techniques as well as understanding the physical, chemical and biological deterioration of fibers.
• Knowledge of current conservation practices related to examination, treatment and preservation.
• Excellent planning abilities
• Well developed interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work as a team member
• Ability to work on their own; being self-motivated, and able to take initiative
• Ability to communicate with the public on conservation issues
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Photographic and computer skills are required
